I have an IOgear USB KVM connecting a USB keyboard and USB mouse to a Dell Laptop that has Ubuntu 14.04 on it and a Mac Mini (latest possible OS for that hardware), Mac is circa 2008. This KVM has one connector for Video, one USB connecter for both mouse and keyboard and one audio connector.

Some system emulations on Linux use KVM, a special emulation mode which claims to reach nearly native speed. KVM is mainly used for x86 (32 and 64 bit) emulation on x86 hosts running Linux. Should you want to run Qemu with KVM support on a G5, depending on your distribution, you might have to compile your own kernel with KVM support. Its KVM switch virtualization frees up your workspace, removing the cables and extra hardware of a traditional KVM switch. Whether you are a designer, editor, call center agent or road warrior using both a PC and laptop, Multiplicity makes working across multiple computers a breeze. KVM uses a combination of security-enhanced Linux (SELinux) and secure virtualization (sVirt) for enhanced VM security and isolation. SELinux establishes security boundaries around VMs. SVirt extends SELinux’s capabilities, allowing Mandatory Access Control (MAC) security to be applied to guest VMs and preventing manual labeling errors.
- 1 day ago Just a thought experiment: Shouldn't it be feasible to install a headless KVM enabled linux on a separate partition/drive/USB and boot macOS from there? While this could seem totally overkill regarding how far the OpenCore boot loader has advanced for running current macOS versions on those machines, it would enable this as well, while possibly also enabling some kind of overclocking.
- I needed to record a demo on a Mac, I don't own a Mac and was contemplating borrowing one from a friend. Then I realised, I finally had an excuse to give this a go! I've been itching to since I read - Accelerated KVM guests on WSL 2, an awesome write-up on how to run accelerated KVM guests on WSL2 from @unixterminal.
Everything seems to work fine except for the odd occasion when I switch back to the Mac and I'm presented with the crash overlay telling me to hard reset the MAC.
This setup is somewhat new because my Windows 8 desktop system crashed, but when the windows machine was running with the Mac I was using a PS2 IOGear KVM and I never saw this Apple crash message. I did have the mouse and the keyboard into the Mac separately (from the KVM) through a USB extender/multiplier but it was not powered, and I did have to use a separate USB nouse for the PC because I could not get the USB mouse to connect to the Windows machine through the PS KVM, but I think this has nothing to do with my present problem.
Is there some strange Mac OS problem when switching USB mice and keyboards between computers using a USB KVM?
And...It doesn't happen everytime.
Thanks,
Warren
