And just like with all Google apps, Tasks is meant to shine on Apple’s mobile operating system.

But how do Reminders and Google Tasks stack against each other on iOS? Is it worth ditching Apple’s offering in favor of Google’s? Time to take a closer look and find out.

How They Look

Both Reminders and Google Tasks are quite different in terms of aesthetics. Torrent word for mac pirate bay. Reminders seemingly has that typical iOS design flair to it, with paper textured lists — akin to the Notes app — featuring big and bold headings that you can easily switch to.

Google Tasks, on the other hand, sports Google’s now wide-spread Material Design 2.0. Easy navigation controls at the bottom of the app ensures better one-handed usage compared to Reminders. Switching between lists via the hamburger menu, for example, feel easier on iPhones with larger screen sizes.

Lists Matter

Both Reminders and Google Tasks let you manage lists quite easily. Creating new lists from scratch (or deleting them) is seamlessly implemented.

And as mentioned earlier, Reminders features all your lists prominently within the main interface itself, while Tasks requires that you use a menu to access them. It's a clash between instant visibility of your lists versus the convenience of single-handed usage.

That aside, things do get interesting with Reminders. You can switch between various colors for your list headings for organizing your lists and items in a better way.

And then there's the Scheduled list, which is a master list of sorts that features scheduled to-dos taken from every other list. That contrasts sharply with Google Tasks, which requires you to check the lists for anything that you may have scheduled individually. Yes, you rely primarily on notifications, but it's always nice to see what’s on the table at a glance.

And if you use iOS’s Family Sharing feature, you also have a separate list that you can easily share with your family members. Just add whatever you want into the Family list, and they should sync over to everyone else seamlessly. Cool stuff.

Dealing With To-Dos

When it comes to creating to-dos, both Reminders and Tasks make it pretty simple to do that. With Reminders, just hit the ‘+’-shaped icon, type what you want, and you are good to go. With Google Tasks, that huge Add a New Task button lets you create to-dos in a jiffy.

Both apps also provide the ability to add notes to your to-dos, specify times to receive notifications, and even set certain tasks to recur (hourly, daily, weekly, etc.). Reminders also provides an option that lets you prioritize to-dos, which makes for a nice touch.

But this is where Reminders actually has a superior advantage over Tasks — location-based reminders. And with that feature, you can specify the app to notify you of a to-do whenever you enter or leave a location. It’s super-easy to set up, and works phenomenally well.

And the possibilities are pretty much endless. You can, for example, set a reminder for your shopping list to show up whenever you are in the vicinity of your local supermarket. Phenomenal.

Siri Support

Siri entirely integrates Reminders. If you hate typing, you can tell Siri to add your to-dos quite easily either by using the 'Hey Siri' voice command or after activating it manually.

And you can also ask her to do just about anything that you would normally do otherwise — setting recurring tasks, adding location-based reminders, etc.

When it comes to Google Tasks, the lack of support for Siri really hurts. Aside from asking her to open the app for you, you need to do everything else yourself.

Note: For location-based reminders to work via Siri voice commands, you need to save whatever locations that you want to include as contacts first via the Contacts app.

Supported Platforms

With Reminders, you are restricted to the Apple ecosystem (iOS and macOS), and no support for Android. However, you can access Reminders from any desktop via iCloud.com if you don't mind the general sluggishness of the user interface.

With Google Tasks, you can access your list of to-dos from pretty much any device. It has a dedicated app for Android which is integrated into Google Calendar on desktop. And yes, Google Calendar is also a web app, but it's far more polished and easy to use compared to iCloud.com.

And the Winner Is ..?

As you saw, Reminders beats Google Tasks solidly in terms of the features that it offers. But in the end, all depends on what you prefer.

If you like Apple’s approach to-do management, such as the nifty location-based notifications, tight integration with Siri, etc., then Reminders is the obvious fit. Or if you want something more simplistic, and has widespread availability on multiple platforms, then Google Tasks is the way to go.

20 Best iPhone Apps With Useful Widgets

Back in the day, Google had three or four applications with a reminder or to-do functionality. One could set the reminder through Google Keep, Google Assistant, Gmail, and Google feed. However, the consumers kept requesting Google to provide the tasks under a single umbrella instead of confusing them with a spread.

And finally, Google delivered on it with the introduction of Google Tasks back in 2018. Google Tasks felt bare-bone compared to its established rivals. Even a basic functionality such as push notification was missing.

Now the updates have improved the situation for Google Tasks, but it’s still not up to the mark for a power user. And that’s why, we will talk about the top five Google Tasks alternatives for Android and iOS.

1. Microsoft To-Do

We can’t talk about a Google rival without mentioning a product from Microsoft. In 2015, Microsoft purchased the popular task management app called Wunderlist and shut it down in favor of Microsoft To-Do. Since then, the company has been slowly porting over all the existing features of Wunderlist to the new To-Do app.

The app starts with a My Day screen, which shows all the upcoming to-dos for the day. You can also add any tasks in the My Day screen with reminder functionality.

The app also provides a list function where you can add a list of items and even share the entire list to a member.

Probably, the biggest advantage of Microsoft To-Do is its cross-platform availability and price. The app is free to use with no extra cost and is available on Android, iOS, and Windows.

2. Todoist

If you are looking for a powerful to-do app with tons of functionality, then your search ends here. Todoist provides a plethora of functions, is beautifully designed, and follows UI guidelines of respective iOS and Android platforms.

The default tab is the Today tab, which shows the remaining to-do tasks for the day. The ability to add new tasks is quite a unique experience. Unlike other apps, Todoist has kept it simple with a smart solution.

As you can see in the image, you can quickly add all the relevant details such as name, date, priority, list name right from the minimal menu.

Swipe left and you can see all the sections from lists, tags, and priorities. You can also discover all the tasks weekly and monthly.

Productivity tab shows all the data with graphs. You can also enable Siri shortcuts through the settings menu.

The app is available on iOS, Android, Web, and Windows. And it follows a subscription business model. Most features are paid, so you must pay to unleash the full potential of Todoist.

3. Things 3

Things 3 follows the all-in-one philosophy with tasks, reminders, goals, and project management. The app recently went through a major redesign, and the added benefits are visible here.

In terms of UI, the app is super clean but carries a lot of white backgrounds. By default, it shows the relevant tabs with Today, Upcoming, Someday, and Anytime tasks. Swipe down and you can search for any item from the app.

Tapping on the ‘+’ button lets you choose from adding a new task, new area, or new project. For the project, you can add tags, deadlines, time, and subtasks as well.

Adding a new task opens a small pop-up menu bar at the top. It’s minimal and gets the job done within a few taps.

Other functionalities include Siri shortcuts, calendar events, Reminders integration, and theming support.

The app is only available for iOS and macOS for now. The web version is coming soon according to the developers. The iOS version costs $10 upfront while the Mac version will set you back by $50.

4. TickTick

TickTick follows the basics instead of integrating every possible function in the app. Same as their rivals, TickTick lets you create, edit, and complete the tasks with calendar integration.

The app integrates a basic UI with violet theme. It’s a clean design with all the relevant options within reach.

My only problem with TickTick is that most of the useful functions are buried in the settings menu. You need to go into Settings > Tab Bar to enable Pomo Timer, Search function, or Habit Chain functionality.

The combination of all these additions has made TickTick my daily driver from the above bunch. It offers something for everyone. As for me, I mostly use it to build a habit chain.

Following Todoist, TickTick also runs on subscription. Pay $27.99 annually once and get access to it on every platform.

5. Any.do

Any.do has a unique take on productivity. Instead of going to any menu, the app shows all the relevant details right on the home screen.

You can jump-in any list and start making to-dos and tasks with timer, attachments, place, description, etc.

The biggest highlight of the app is how it plans your day. It will suggest all the tasks one by one and will ask you to take action on it.

A couple of things to mention here. I ran into some crashes from my limited time of usage, and adding new task screen is a mess. It’s not minimal like others and asks way too many details upfront.

Any.do is a paid app, and it follows a subscription business model.

Get Things Done in Style

As you can see from the above list, each app offers a significant advantage over the basics Google Tasks app. Microsoft To-Do is free and available on every platform. But then again, the other rivals such as Todoist, TickTick, and Any.do take things to the next level with more productivity hacks.
